An American essayist, naturalist and poet of Concord, Massachusetts, and a friend and disciple of Emerson. Two years in a cabin by Walden Pond became Walden (1854), and a night in jail for refusing to pay his poll tax prompted “Resistance to Civil Government” (1849), later known as “Civil Disobedience”. He wrote and spoke against slavery to the end of his life.
