John Henry Newman
21 February 1801 – 11 August 1890
An English theologian, preacher and man of letters. A leader of the Oxford Movement in the Church of England, he became a Roman Catholic in 1845 and a cardinal in 1879. Besides The Idea of a University, his works include the autobiographical Apologia Pro Vita Sua and the poem The Dream of Gerontius.
