A British philologist, poet and judge. A prodigious linguist, he made his name with A Grammar of the Persian Language (1771) and translations of Persian and Arabic poetry, then went to Calcutta in 1783 as a judge of the Supreme Court. There he founded the Asiatic Society of Bengal and proposed, in a lecture of 1786, that Sanskrit, Greek and Latin descend from a common source.
