Walt Whitman

An American poet, essayist and journalist. Leaves of Grass, first published at his own expense in 1855 and revised and enlarged for the rest of his life, broke with traditional metre and subject, and its frank sensuality made it notorious. During the Civil War he worked as a volunteer nurse in the hospitals of Washington, an experience he recorded in Specimen Days (1882).
